In 1993 my wife, from Nuernberg, and daughter, born in Nuernberg Army hospital in 1965, and I visited the barracks, though closed. We slipped into “B” Battery quarters and have video of the barracks and especially the room I used for 1 1/2 years before I married in Nuernberg.

Does anyone remember this car or know anything about it? I will post a photo on the photo site.ThanksRay Moore:

John, I was at Monteith 68-70. Worked in TSO/Supply Mgmt upstairs in the warehouse. Played basketball for the 126th then with the 4th AD team and the Bamberg Barons.Knew Shulka well, went to Greece Operation Olympic Express with him.Al Pittsinger:
John,Just found your note on Jim Hallett. He was from Reeders PA at that time.I think it is up north east PA. near the Pocono’s. There are a lot of ski resorts in that area. Don’t have a phone or address, just name and town in my address book from Germany.George Hock was from Bloomsburg PA.I think he left in 69 also.I talked to him once on my way to NY in 1970 or 71. Said he didn’t remember anyone from that time except little Jake. They were TDY in Bamberg their whole tour.I found my copy of expert rifle badge qualifing scores from Nov 25 1968. You are listed on the front as scoring 81.I shot a 78,minium for expert was 75.There are a lot of names I remember on that list, but putting a face on them is impossible.I spent 30 years with Coca Cola. We used to get all our caned products from Mid-Atlantic canners from Zanesville.Hey Rick, I still haven’t found my pictures yet.I will keep looking.rick pennick:
john did you get the pics i sent youAl Pittsinger:
John, Glad you got the pics. I can’t put a face on Wesley Finder.Maybe someone has a pic of him they could send me.We had so many different departments back then, if you didn’t work with someone or share a room with him ,you knew the face but probably not the name.I spent a lot of time on the road, courier runs, parts runs, payroll runs, trips to Graf, driving the CO where ever he wanted to go.I had it figured out before I left Germany that I drove over 100,000 miles in the 2 1/2 years I was over there.Seems like the only time I was at Montieth for an extended period of time was when Rick and I walked permanent guard duty together.Did the qualification paper come through okay?

Yes I remember Greg; he bought my fiat when I went back to the states; he had been wanting to go to medical school back in Pa when he got out of the army; at the time I left he worked in the orderly room and basically ran the unit; I think my CO was a Major Caskey;Donovan:
CPT Caskey that was the CO !!!
Exactly.. good memory :-)Donovan:
The BEST XO we had was Steve Inkelbarger…If you’re out there..I OWE you Eltee..thank youJoe:
I was almost sure that CPT Caskey had been promoted while I was still there but maybe not; I think our 1Sgt was Tollie Waller; that is a name I wouldn’t forget; does that ring a bell?Donovan:

She had one 5 y. old boy. his name was Markes and 2 younger girls. I used to bring my 4 y. Son Nicholas with me to babysitt. The 2 girls were so addorable. I would braid and play with their hair all day. Rodriguez was mean as a snake and the last time I babysitt, he came home and beat the living daylights out of the boy for no reason at all. I probally should called the police back then. I often think about those kids and what ever happend to them. If Markes is reading this: I’m sorry that I did not intervened. I never experineced someone beating a child and I wish I would reverse time. I surely would have stoped it somehow.
If you out there plese contact me. I would love to hear from you and I pray that you are all ok

By the way, what was the name of the restaurant down Vacher Str. into Furth on the right at trolley turnaround that was owned by 2 greek brothers?Rothy:

The greek restrant is still there in fürth dove past just the other day the name I can’t remember but the food was great.David Crawford:

B. 67 Armor We had the M103 heavy tanks then went to the M60 anybody rember winter shield 2 COLD was the word of the day. Gean A. Ray are you out there or any one else drop a line.Bruce Saenger:
I was in B-Company, third platoon. I certainly remember Winter Shield 2 plus the monthly alerts, the cold weeks in Graf, etc. I was a driver on B-31 (I think that was the number of our tank).Lee:
Hey Bruce…….You guys must have had the M48Bruce:
We had the M-48s for a short time…hard to shift and tough to keep on the road above 25 MPH!! The 6 foot flames licking off the jettison drums filled with high octane gas was also of concern!!! The M-60s were a big step up…at least until the heaters stopped working. Do you remember trying to start the heater with a rag tied to the end of a coat hanger that was soaked in diesel fuel??John Callahan:
M-60 Tank heaters were a bitch, we used the same method to start ours, also. They sold the heater repair kits on the black market and we could never get any through supply. We kept them running because we never knew if we could get them going again if we turned them off.Leon Mangano:
You guys haven’t lived till you played with the M103 Heavy tank.talk about a monster with a mind of its own. when we got the M60 it was like getting a new caddy.Jim Spence:
Jim Spence- I was there 1964-65 Company 2/37,C,Company,3rd platoon. We always had M60 and were moving to M60-A1. The heater stories are true. we always kept an extra one located inside the exaust doors in the rear of the tank. My Company commander was LT Waters Grandson of General Patton.

Sunday, 21. December 2008 11:10 Host: ip68-9-145-155.ri.ri.cox.net  This weekend I was picking up some Christmas gifts in a package store. I came across some Tucher beer. I hadn’t had a Tucher since 1970 in Furth. Brought back many memories! Anyone remember the name of the beer that the pizza shop outside the hole in the fence served late 60’s-70’s?John Fuzi:
The beer that is most popular in fuerth is zirndorfer, but they don’t make enough to export,if you want to buy a american beer that you can’t tell the differance, try sam adams lager, looks the same, smells the same, taste’s the same, the hops come from the same place,I had people bring me zirndorferfrom fuerth, they can’t tell the differanceAl P.:
BergBrau was another beer.It was brewed in Furth not to far from Monteith. That’s where everyone got the large grey crock mugs from. It was the only local brewery you could order them from.Mine is only 3 ltr. They also had a 5 ltr. one.It took 2 hands to pick it up when it was full.Tom:
Al,
Yes, BergBrau was the one I remember. Zirndorfer was also was the other one. Thanks and Happy New Years to all!Peter:
BergBrau Brewery closed late 70’s. Great beer!AL P.:
Peter.Bummer on the brewery closing. That was the smoothest beer I had in the 2+ years I was in Germany.T loyola:
Tony here. Was over there in the 80’s Patrizier brau was good stuff too.Rothy:
Yea, I’m with Tony. Patrizier had a light weizen that was great! Wish I could get some here!Tom:
I Googled Patrizier and read that they merged with Tucher in the mid 90’s. I never could figure out why the GI’s drank Bud and Miller in Germany when we had all that great bier!Al P.:
Hey Tom, I was looking through some of my beer glasses and coasters and found a beer that was from Furth that I forgot about. Humbser bier. We drank alot of it also.Tom “Zonker” Harris:
I haven’t seen any Tucher beer, but did run across some of the cardboard Tucher beer coasters….we used to dispense Tucher in our coke machines in our barracks….I was stationed at Monteith from 71-74…..crazy times…I do remember the hole in the back fence….Tom:
Wow, Humbser Bier, forgot about that one. The brewery supposedly opened in 1578 and closed in 1980. Good run. Once I saw the beer coaster I remembered it.Chuck Wallis:
Another great Beer from Fuerth was Gruener. They have closed since.
After the merger of Patrizier and Tucher, they opened up a bottling plant on Johnson Barracks.

Leejay Robles, Dean Weaver, Earl Heike and I was in a band on post called “Rockport”, we used to rock the talent shows. Some names in our barracks: Bull, Paco, the only names I can recall without help. My roommate was named Tim Maybe. He was a strange one, he killed an Officers wife just off post and went to Levenworth, probably still there. It’s weird, I don’t remember a pizza place across the street but definitely the bar. Had my first Patrizier Beer there. Went out and partied in Nuremberg alot. There was a country bar I remember we went to alot. Can’t recall the name. Our First Sgt. was named Pharris and I recall a Sgt. Rucker. I was 69th Chemical Company’s supply guy. Anyone remember any of this?? LOL!!JV:
I remember 87-89, that your company was commonly called “69th Criminals” by the other units. Probably because of your roommate!Hines:
I remember PFC Maybe and the murder. I was in F Co, right next to 69th.M Casey Brwaterdogs@aol.:
C Co 4sb later changed to 123 sb. I remember… That Maybe thing was a trip. The country bar was called the Nashville. You had to drink alot of Patrizier because you walked past the pizza joint to get to the the ranch. I understand it was all a blereChristine:
Chuck were you ever hanging out in fuerth with me and my mom?jorge:
SGT Rucker was a Vietnam Vet. whenever you talked to him he would shift his weight from leg to leg constantly. that made it really difficult to talk to him while he was rocking from side to sidePina:
The name of the guy who killed an Officer’s wife was Tim Murray, not Maybe. He used to come to our pizza-place ‘pizzeria americana’ to get peperoni pizza. blond guy, average height, very quiet and intro. Strange and creepy feeling everytime I saw him.

The crew of “super psych techs” and officers in charge in November 1974 is pictured elsewhere on this website. We quietly took care of our business (whatever it was), only had to deal with a relative minimum of the military minutia and no one really bothered us… even when it was reported one morning that two beer toting streakers in only combat boots were seen running past the “WAC shack” and making a beeline for the dispensary the previous night. “Crazy” days… and nights! When staff left MHCS for their next assignment or “the world,” we stapled one of our olive green uniform names tags to the inside of the clinic’s front office closet door… not sure when that tradition started, but I wonder what ever happened to that “honor roll?”John Goldston:

Saturday, 26. July 2008 16:27 Host: pool-71-242-179-137.phlapa.east.verizon.net  I was assigned to B Company 123rd from 82 -84. I read mosty everyones posted scripts and I don’t see many people that was in my unit. The reason, I believe is because my unit was like another basic training unit with mechanical work thrown in. B Company was run by a bunch of condecending NCO’s who would write you for the most mox-nix bullsit. People with no reguard for your well being . We’d often had to work long hours while everyone else on post was off. The demands were emormos and NCO’s were all lazy assholes who passed down their obligations to subordinates. They were all-ways at our throats in a school yard bullying way. The good ol’ days weren’t all-ways good. It was so bad that when I went back home on leave, I wrote, FTA with cocaine powder on a mirror. We had an attic full of people who failed piss tests. During the time I was there, the company chaptered out many very good mechanics even though there was a shortage of people. This resulted bad morale and distrust. I couldn’t wait to get to Fort Ord. I wish we had had better NCO’s at the time. Many of friends were uncremonosly chaptered out. The stress was difficult to take.
I guess that’s why I don’t see too many people I knew pot anything.
But I some how got lucky. They assigned me to work the SP Gate. Saw many great concerts, went to many company trips and hung out with many cool dudes from all over the country. I have posted my Army pictures on Classmates. Lots to see, check it out.dave::

July 2008 17:58 Host: c-76-103-190-87.hsd1.ca.comcast.net  I just found this site after reading a post by Tom Stewart I too would like to have my recollections about the Mental Hygiene Consultation Service, 4th AD, circa 1966 Ñ 1967. I also worked with C. A. Smith psychiatrist, Colonel William Mac (who I assume you replaced),Bob Swinter (see picture I just posted), Dennis Hartline, Ed Winereb (where are you), Larry Haddad, John Otopan and others that will come to this rusty brain as I think about them.Except for the fact that we performed ” bloodless surgery”, this could have been a chapter out of Mash. Assigned to a Medical company out of Erlangan, TDY to an Artillery company for food and pay, assigned to the Medical dispensary re assigned to Mental Hygiene unit over the dispensary where we lived on one side of the hallway and our offices and “conferance/dayroom” on the other side. The officer in charge was the psychiatrist (a Captain), The Social Work Officer was a Lt. Colonel.
Nobody at Monteith Barracks real knew what we did or where we should be doing it, i.e. the Genreal’s comments were “oh those are Col. Mack’s boys, (the shrinks), leave them alone”. When alerts were called our duty station was our dayroom. I took over the post projectionist job at the movie theater from Denny Hartline after the took a Euopean out. During the alerts we would watch the current movies in the post theather. Wife Kimiko (Kimi) was assigned to Post Special Services. Would like to hear from others during that tie period.Dan Gossett:
Hello Danniel
I probably met you during that time. I remember Kimiko well.
She must have heard me playing piano in one of the upstairs rooms at the Service Club.
Talked me into participating in the talent contest.
I must still have the certificate for first place – piano solo signed be her.
Thank you and Kimiko for being there. Great job!Danniel Kientz:
Kimi is in the area on a 2 month vacation visiting freinds she made in the Furth area while we were there.

Tuesday, 29. April 2008 17:49 IP: 1-1-13-18a.gmt.gbg.bostream.se  Hi all,
I was stationed at Monteith from March 71 to January 72. I was the company clerk for Co B, 501st S%T Battalion. We had the barracks just to the left as you entered the gate. Anyone need name look-ups for that period for Company B, I have a copy of the November roster.
There was a story going around when I was there about fully fueled and armed German fighters in underground hangers under the airfield (remember those odd slabs on the airfield?) As the story went, the hangers were booby-trapped and that the Army Engineers tried clearing them after the war, but that it had take XX days to clear XXX meters, so they just flooded it all. From what I’ve been able to find out, it’s not true, but it’s a good story.Leroy McKnight “Sgt Mac”:
Hi Joel

Hdqts & A Co 1970-1972

My duty station was at the TSO (Technical Supply Offices) on the mezzine level of the warehouse/hanger SW corner of the post. I can tell you this: Our warehouse had an overhead crane in the ceiling that could cover the entire floor level. On the east side of the floor there were also huge “doors/panels” obviously to lower and raise aircraft from. The crane still worked then, but I never saw the floor doors opened. Also, I had keys to all the mezzine offices, and one weekend I used them to “try” the door at the main level of the staircase (normally used only to access the mezzine level). One of the keys did in fact unlock the door where upon I found stairs going down. I went down to full stories and came upon another door that would have lead to the west or inside of the hanger. However, that door was welded shut completely around the door. So, whoever welded it did NOT want ANYONE accessing it. So I am certain that there were underground facilities in our hanger. Though I not find the first two of them to be flooded, and rumors of loaded planes could never be verified either way. However, as you alluded to, regarding the plates on the air strip… There was always “talk” that planes could be moved from the lower levels could be moved underground directly to the airstrip and raised to ground level. Again, these aircraft transport “tunnels” were never verified. And, what would be the point of having the crane??? So there were some truths to all those rumors, but only that there were at least two levels under the main hanger floor. I hope this helps…

By the way… It saddened me to just now read that Monteith had been “decommissioned” in Sept 1993… I had a LOT of memories there. Not the least of which was the fact that I lived “on the economy” in Oberfurburg a small town due west of Furth. My back yard neighbor was Heir Schickedanz. He owned a Germany wide chain of large department stores… If anyone is interested from his family I still have several “slides” of him and his son on their pony wagon as the “rounded the block”… LHMLLC@Hotmail.com

I’m going back someday soon just to walk the grounds… smilemynameisgoor:
You are not right.Tom Stalgaitis:

in “C” Battery/14th. I remember Charlie’s place very well and “Charlie” took care of me a few times. Does anyone remember the “Colibri”? I was there when the “wall” started and the standoff in Oct 62 with Russia about the missiles in cuba.larry cummings:
Charlie, I was in Hq Battery ’60-’61. Sure do remember Colibri, and when I was there it was Charlie’s Pig Pen, not just Charlies. The image I will always have of the Pig Pen was sitting across from a couple of lovely looking young ladies, watching them eat and suddenly one of them reaching into her mesh bag and pulling out a bottle of Old Spice after shave lotion and dousing her underarms and handing it to her friend and she doing the same. Old Spice brought a good penny on the black market.Jack Haikey:
I remember the Colibri (?), it was first bar I visited, a fight broke out, whole place was in uproar, I wanted to stay and see, but buddies said Let’s go before MPs get here. Was in 2/14 artillery, Battalion Mnt. clerk. 64-67.
