He was slightly shined up as I recall.Someone saw him pass by their second floor window and thought it was a laundry bag. I recall waking up one fine spring morning and opening my window. As I leaned upon my ledge.(with my bare arms)I discovered the person in the room above had blew chow all over my ledge.Yummy kevin womble:

He was my loader on an M551.He had a speech impedement which caused him to have a pronounced stutter. He was convicted of killing a German girl. My fellow crewmembers were taken to the Polezei station and questioned in the investigation. My T.C. was Rosetti and I can’t remember my driver.Does anyone know what became of Junior?kevin womble:
I remember a guy named Steve Rowe that spoke really good German that raped and killed a German girl. Woke up to Polezie all over C troop hall. Never saw Steve again!Mark Pierucki:
I remember Rowe. When did he do that? I left in May 1975.

SP4. White was stabbed to death in the mess hall. I’m hoping it wasn’t Chuck White whom I used to hang with! He hailed from Missouri. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah and Womble, you @#%!^&*.THANKS FOR SENDING ME A VIRUS!!!!!Steve Harper:
OMG……I’d forgot about that. I was in the mess hall line when it happened.Mark Pierucki:
Harper, you didnt say if it was Chuck White from Missouri!!??Steve Harper:
Sorry, Don’t remember his first name. He was black and I thought from a big city….could be wrong. Not too popular. Had a big mouthBob Frankeberger “Frank”:
Harper and I were good friends and he kept me posted of the B Troop news from Schwabach from July 75-July 76 and I rememeber him sending me a letter about the stabbing because we both knew White. White was not well liked as I remember, but I was still shocked to hear that he or anyone else I knew had been stabbed. I don’t remember his first name, BUT in looking at my 1975 B Troop photo he is there (a PFC) with the first initial “D” (all of us in the photo are listed with first initial only before our last name.I’m pretty sure it’s him in the Troop photo I have. I’ve checked out the old barracks a couple of times on GOOGLE Earth and knew it didn’t look the same as I remembered it. Anyway, I arrived in Schwabach in March 75 I believe. I came over short, with only 18 months left in service so I went back to the real world in October 76. I loved most of my time there and have a lot of great memories. I recognize the guy in the front row center of the cook’s picture from Thanksgiving dinner 75. I was in “C” troop, 1/1 I believe. I was in the barracks directly across the street from the PX, whatever troop that was. Some guys I can remember, I think, are Dan Jimmerson from Quapaw, OK., a guy that came in the Army from the USMC by the name of Wagoner, I believe there was a SGT. Bilko if memory serves. Others will come to me, I’m sure. Anybody out there that remembers me, holler back. I was an E-5 infantry squad leader w/2 m-113’s in my squad. There is a lady that has signed the book whom I believe was married to a Conales. Well, my platoon Sgt. was Sgt. Conales and we had another guy, shorter guy with a black mustache was an E-5 Conales, also. As a matter of fact, I believe the younger Conales’ dad had served with the Plt. Sgt. Conales in ‘Nam if I’m not mistaken. So, I’ll touch base again when my memory clicks a little better. Any of my friends out there? Let me hear from you….BUCK

I was in 4th Armor, 2/4 Cav, A Trp, 1st Plt Scouts, A-11, at O’Brien Barracks May’65 to Dec’67. I have found a few other guys who were there at that time and would like to contact others.
Check out 490, 516, 527.Bob VanAntwerp:
Steve, Have you been in contact with Finn? I haven’t heard a word from him or about him, he was from Indy If I recall.Steve:
Bob, Finchly was from Indy, but couldn’t contact him. Henry Leal may have an e-mail/number for him through Dan Goetsch. Would be great to see both at the reunion.Bob VanAntwerp:
I think Dan was from Milwaukee, funny how we can remember some of this stuff… I would have thought you and Finn would have kept in contact, I know you were tight.Steve:
Bob,
Henry mentioned that Dan and Ray went to Waycross together to see Bobby C, so maybe still a connect.
The plan was on Ray coming out to CA after separation, but it didn’t happen.henry:
Steve/Bob,when I reached Danny he and Finn met up with Bobby C some where in Ga.had a short visit and left. They tried to get back to him but lost contact.Danny lost touch finn also, last know location Minneapolis.bob:
I contacted George Patterson about the reunion. He said the details would be posted here in March. So I’m keeping an eye peeled. Why can’t I remember Bobby C.???? CRS when I was young maybe?

Hi Laura,

My name is Howard Bucknam (Buck) and I just discovered this site last week and was really glad to read your comments because when I was over there from March ’75 to October ’76 I served with two Canales’! One was actually my platoon Sgt. and a younger one who was then an E-5 (Buck Sgt.) like myself. As a matter of fact, if memory serves, Plt. Sgt. Conales actually served with the younger Sgt. Conales’ dad or knew him in some way. Now, I don’t know that they were related but it was strange that both of them wound up in the same unit in Germany. I was in “C” Troop, 1/1 Cav as an infantry squad leader with two APC’s in my squad. Both Sgt. Conales’ were super guys and well liked by most everybody. I know I really enjoyed my time there with them. The younger (Sgt.) Conales actually had his driver’s license for over there and a, what else, Volkswagon and would drive us around if we needed to go somewhere if he could. It saved having to take the train or other transportation. Do you know them both and are they okay? I’d love to find out about them. Please drop a note back on the Guestbook under my entry when you get a chance. My entry is #559. Waiting to hear from you but they may not remember me, maybe, I don’t know!

I was there Jan 73-July 75, B Troop, 2nd platoon with Sgt Paz, Sgt Black, Sgt Childers (short eye) and so many more of us lowly enlisted men. (We enlisted men had all the fun though). I’ll have to round up some pics to add to the site. I began looking at this sight about 16 months ago and I have replied in a few spots mostly after Steve Harper.Great memories Steve. I just re-connected with Joe Fixl and we talk and email. He is now in South Carolina. So much more to say. I’ll save it for later.

I’ll have to get off my ass and post some pics on here. I don’t know if you remember Sgt Jim Kitson from the third heard, but he passed away last year. take care and stay in touch.charlie page:
Hi Bob I remember you guys, I think Black was a SP/5. I was a mechanic 73-74 . Did you known any of these guys, Max Heumann, Risk Slimp, Behanna and Biewer ?Bob Frankeberger:
Charlie,
I remember Max and Biewer. I went to a concert with Max and Chuck Mutton to see Led Zepplin in Nurnmberg. He and Chuck were friends. Chuck and I were roommates at the time in ’73.I actually have a pic of Max standing outside the concert venue waiting for them to open up. In those days (at least in Germany) they didn’t have designated seats. First come first serve.
BobBob Frankeberger:
Hi Steve,
George and I lost contact about 1980. We partied together from 75-80 after we got out, but we kinda of drifted apart as I was settling and slowing down a bit. He was a great friend and we enjoyed playing and watching sports alot, especially baseball. He was a little league coach too. He lived just 30 minutes away in Glendale (north of LA). He and I drove back to Indy. in the summer of ’77 to see his uncle; we stopped in on SSG Welch “Stanley” in Cincy, OH. I do remember Sgt Kitson. Do you remember he dated to the SgtMajor’s daughter. Joe Fixl told me that my gunner Bob Martin(Wink, TX)passed away last year. FYI, you and I went to see Edel in Stuttgart. I have some pics of that trip. More later.
Bob

Hey Charlie, check with V.A. on hearing aids. I had same problem and they gave me 2 $4,000 hearing aids that work great. Super small. So check in with them, fill out a one sheeter and see what they will do. Remember the Veterans administration (which has to do congresses dirty work and really suck at it) is quite different from V.A. Hospital, which REALLY trys to help the vet with minimum hassle. (not like 30 years ago) they have changed and have top notch medicine, at least here in Denver.

Drove out to Ft Gordon last Friday afternoon to escort 7 buses w/ 300 troops to the airport for another tour of the ‘sandbox’ and I couldn’t help having ‘flashbacks’ to when I took Basic there in ’67.(B-3-1).These are kids!!!!!!

I remember the pink tank. Gary Owen (7th Cav) “stole” it and did the paint job. You were correct as they were still classified at the time. It got a lot of folks excited.Michael J. Harbin:

Sunday, 16. August 2009 18:27 Host: ool-182fd63d.dyn.optonline.net  Does anyone have any photos of the old steam locomotives that usually pulled our troop trains in 1966-68 (and that continued to be used in Germany until 1976)? I just discovered Donald Rom’s photos of the arrival of the new Sheridan tanks in 1968, and it looks like a steam engine on the train. (These photos are in a subdirector /militarygallery. Got that, troopers?)Sid Kelly:
Hey Fred–speak english–(lol) how do I/we get to this ‘subdirector/military gallery’?? I’d like to see those photos–thanks!!Fred Barry Nelson:
Hi Sid, I appreciate your frustration. The Guestbook format won’t let me copy the link. Go to Nurnbergmilitaryarea.com and then click on “New photos from Donald Rom” in the “Military Photo Gallery.” The photo looks like a rural training area–not the Schwabach Bahnhof–which may explain why these pics aren’t in the O’Brien Barracks part of this wonderful website. It’s not “English” to me either! Aber Ich spreche ein Wenig deutsch. Aufwiederschreiben!Sid Kelly:
Thanks, Fred: I checked out the photos and remember those days well. Later generations of Tankers never heard of the M551 or its ability to swim–Fred Barry Nelson:
Hi Sid, Glad you found the photos of the M551 Sheridan tanks. I’d read about them, but I got out too early to ever see one. One of our 2/4 Cav lieutenants who was involved in the evaluation of the Sheridan gave it a bad rating. But it must’ve been fun.Sid Kelly:
I went to the Chassis Mechanic School for them when they first came out–I, personally, loved them as they ran like a ‘bat out of Hell’. They were designed for VietNam as they would float in the rice paddies unlike the M60’s which would sink. I was not ‘fire control’ certified but I understand they did have some problems in that area–and we CAN’T forget that if you hit a tree or something with the front track idler, the idler would snap off, taking a big portion of the ‘alum’ hull–but it was way ahead of it’s time in lots of areas——Kellyniok:

Had some good times there, except for the “alerts” when we’d have to go out in the field for days, sleeping under the stars. Would have liked to go back there, but never made it. timothy jeffords:
I WAS WITH HHT. 2/4 CAV FROM 67-69 MAINTS PLATOONGreer 1/1 cav:
Hate to break it to you but they were still doing alerts 71′-74′ They even did an alert with a guy on the toilet. They handed him the slip and he wiped himself with it. Didn’t go over too big with higher up. He got out on apathy discharge. General discharge. Also we used to lock the doors from the inside and put one of those lock insert in the keyhole so when you looked in the keyhole it looked like it was locked and no one home. Brass would knock all day but we never came out so they left with out us. Hinton and I had the whole base to ourselves for a week. Do you remember those keyholes, no keys so you would have to use a bent up hanger to get in and out.

High point was the 2nd British Rock Meeting with Pink Floyd, and the low was any trip to Grafenwoehr, the only place in the world where you could get the fine blend of mud, dust and diesel with every breath. Still, I loved O’Brien and was actually sad to leave at the end of my tour. Nothing like waking up to rock and roll music in World War II barracks while the smell of hash melded with the urine fertilizer the farmers spread on the adjacent field. All that and $250 take home pay each month. Priceless!!Sid Kelly:
Hey Cal–I was there Jan ’68-May ’70 (HHT 2/4 Cav) and never heard Graf or O’Brien described exactly as you just did–but you are right!! Love it!!

PFC in commo section D Troop, 15th Cav from Aug 61 to July 63. Remember a guy named SP4 Lutz that I was suppose to replaced in D Troop. He was extended a few months because of the Berlin wall crisis. Boy was he pissed. Then SP4 to SP5 (the best thing about making E-5 was no more KP) in Radar Section, HHQ Troop, 15th Cav (re-designated 4th Cav) from July 63 to Aug. 64. To the people that have posted their pictures, I sure enjoy them.

Wednesday, 20. May 2009 12:06 IP: 66.28.239.130  To Tim J and anyone else who has tried to help me to identify a soldier from the Schwabach Kaserne who, in March 1968, revived a German baby using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The “baby” is now 42 years old and she would like to identify her saviour. Her name is Stephanie Engelage. Further details: She had choked on her bedclothes and had stopped breathing. This happened on Berchtoldstrasse, near the Kaserne. Anyway, her mother (who perhaps did not have a phone), yelled “Hilfe,” and an American soldier came to the rescue. Afterward, the baby’s father gave the soldier a car. But, as Stephanie put it, “Das Auto fuhr der Soldat aber leider bald zu Schrott,” which means, I think, “Unfortunately the soldier quickly drove the car to scrap.” Anyway, she wants to contact the man who saved her. It seems to me that a guy who saved a baby and was given a car would have been famous–he also got in trouble with the MPs for driving without a license. But after nearly two years of trying, I haven’t found anyone who remembers the incident. (I got out of the Army in January 1968.)celticson:
fred nelson nothing so far on the baby i went though the stars and stripes found nothing on a saved baby in schwabach in 1968 i need to hook up with someone that knows german to translate i will get back to you.Fred Barry Nelson:
Hello again, “Celticson.” Thanks for your continued efforts to help find the GI who saved the German baby. BTW, I got the story a bit wrong: the soldier got in trouble with the MPs for driving without INSURANCE (not for driving without a license). Re German translations, I know some German. If you have any links to anything that might be a story about the rescue, I could try to translate.TIM J.:

To whom it may concern:I don’t know if you guys have noticed this yet, but asking people to email in to get a password has SERIOUSLY cut the traffic to this site.Let’s face it; this feature discourages most legit veterans from trying to sign the guestbook and thereby reconnect with old military friends.
This used to be a site I checked everyday, but then one day, I had to have and email in to get a password. After a few months, I finally emailed for one, only to find that practically no one has signed the book since the last time I did.Was spamming really this BIG a problem? Please consider removing this feature until the site has become MUCH more established. There are still a lot of miltary veterans who are only now discovering the internet. The password request feature discourages them from investingating the site. Thanks for your consideration,
John Sullivan

Hi Martin, if it was not for the cooks from differant troops we would have lived on c-rations. You are right we spent a lot of time in the field from one end of Germany to the other. The hot sause made the c-ration taste eatable plus some of us guys were not the best cooks. Take care.

Sunday, 12. April 2009 08:23 Host: rrcs-67-53-144-205.west.biz.rr.com  I arrived in Deutschland in the fall of 1972. I had never been outside of the Midwest before then,(excluding BCT, Ft. Ord and AIT, Ft. Knox. I was only 17 and still somewhat damp behind the ears.
I was amazed at the things you could purchase,(legally and illegally) on the streets of Germany.Switchblades and fireworks were among a few. We would purchase a bag of bottle rockets and sneak them on post by putting the shafts up our sleeve and holding the bag handles as we passed the M.P.”s.
I was in C trp 1/1 cav. My barracks was directly across from the P.X.We would get all abuzz on Tucher and other assorted goodies, then start blasting the rockets from our window. The windows opened inward like two doors. At the bottom of the sill was a receptacle for the latch witch held the shaft of a rocket quite well. Once as a huge rocket was lifting off, it veered back towards the room, hit the ceiling, and came into the room. We all took cover. I jumped against my wall locker and tried to close the doors on myself.
The rocket exploded and burnt a hole in our pretty, newly remodeled, red floor. The room was thick with smoke which then emptied into the hallway as we opened the door. The C.Q. was cool and didn’t report us. We rearranged our furniture and hid the burn with footwear under the bunk. I have so many good memories from so long ago. I was there for 2 1/2 years that seemed like a lifetime then.It was only a brief moment in retrospect.kevin womble:

Tuesday, 7. April 2009 12:32 IP: 66.28.239.130  OK, if the site is getting quiet, How about some tales of the 2/4 Cav–defending Bavaria from the Commies, 1966-68. I remember escape & evasion. I went out with SP4 Alvin Hunsel and SP4 Richard Thielker. I think Hunsel was from rural Indiana or Missouri. He was a natural in the field. I was raised in the city. I’m a good map reader, but if I get lost in the woods, I walk in a circle. So Hunsel & I were a good team. Our strategy to avoid capture was to cheat. We mapped out a route in which we sneaked off the military reservation. We almost got caught on the way out. We met some aggressors in the pitch dark who mistook us for fellow aggressors and let us pass. The way back in was more fun. We saw some aggressors on a road, and we jumped off the side and fell down a steep embankment that was covered with some sort of thorn bushes. We rolled down and were tortured by the thorns. Then we had to ford a stream, and one of us fell in. After a few hours, we achieved the objective…supper at the mess truck. We must have been starving. It was fun. Does anyone else remember this exercise?Sid Kelly:
Didn’t do E&E there–but did it during the NCO Academy–Caught pnemonia and was in bed for a week–they tried to ‘recycle’ me but ‘Frankie V’ came to the rescue—-Second time he ‘rescued’ me during the NCO Academy–First time was when I received a letter from girlfriend w/ a ‘peace symbol’ on the back of the envelope–Top threatened an Article 15 and then, when I wouldn’t accept that, a Courts MartialDonald Rom:
Donald Rom SP5 1967 to 1969, Sure do remember the fun, we walked for hours and wound up back where we started. It got so late that by time we got back the exercise was over.Fred Barry Nelson:
Hey, Sid, Inspiring story about the NCO Academy. As for me, I washed out of OCS…had stress fractures in my shins…and no one came to my rescue when the Army doctors put me on a full profile, which prevented me from doing any PT and made it all-but-certain that I’d be washed out. I was in Co A, Armor OCS, Ft Knox, commanded by CPT Tilley, who said, “No one gets through my company on a profile! I was an also-ran in OCS in any case. But it all seems like fun more than 40 years later. If I’d gotten a commission, I’d have served at least another 10 months, and I’d have had a better chance of going to Nam instead of Schwabach.Fred Barry Nelson:
Hi Don, It sounds as though your approach to escape & evasion was similar to mine. Are you thinking of going to the reunion this year? There’s a ferry from LI to New London.Sid Kelly:
Fred– Ltc Valjean basically ‘took me under his wing’ after doing a surprise visit to my inspection bay one morning–I was in the pit inspecting one of the new M-715’s and he showed up and started asking all sorts of questions–I don’t think I knew exactly what I was talking about (esp when it came to the difference between an oil leak and a seep) but like I told Sfc Ekerst when he asked about the visit–‘either dazzle ’em with brilliance or baffle ’em with bull s—‘ and ‘Frankie V’ was my friend from then on–TIM J.:

Hi Tim, The woman’s name is Stephanie Engelage. But she must be 41 years old now, so “Engelage” may be her married name. I just sent her an email in German asking for her birth name. Thanks again for your help.TIM J.:

JUST GIVE ME A NAME.Fred Barry Nelson:
Tim J–and anyone else who’s interested: I heard from Stephanie Engalage and “Engalage” is indeed her maiden name. It’s amazing that no one seems to recall the incident of an American soldier reviving a German baby with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in March 1968. Regards to all.

We used to pile up snow around the tent if you had to sleep on the ground. WOW !!! it is cold in your area this morning. 25 and windy here and don’t want to know chill factor probably. Congrats on the 57 bel air. Bet it will be beautiful. I may never get my 57 pontiac cause they’re hard to find at a reasonable price in restorable condition and I’m getting a little old to do all of the work myself. Kept me warm on many a night!!– I’m in Powder Springs Ga just outside Atlanta and it’s 17 outside my house at this time with a windchill of around 2-I’ve got a ’57 2door post Bel Air in the upholstery shop right now and can’t wait to get her out (named her ‘Christine’ after the Steven King book–she’s haunted!!) I, too, don’t really like the front wheel drive-I like to kick something and have the rear wheels start spinning, fishtailing!!!Keep in touch!!

Sunday, 1. February 2009 08:56 Host: h132.166.72.24.cable.srlk.cablerocket.net You’re right Sid The atomic cannon was a 280 mm gun I’m guessing about 40-50 ft long pulled with a tractor powered by the old 6 cyl opposed engine used in our little 76 mm tanks. I think it also had another tractor that pushed from the rear of the gun tube. The engine in the tractor was called an AOS 895. A for air cooled, O for opposed figuration meaning cylinders were 180 degrees apart ans S meaning supercharged. 895 cubic inches was the displacement of the engine made by Continental Motors by the way. Think they have since gone out of business. The cannon was an awesome sight back there in 1959-60 when we thought that our 90 mm guns on big tanks were impressive. Thanks for your comments..JohnSid Kelly:
John-you sound like me when you’re rattling off the engine description on that thing!! The M60 had an AVDS1790-2 w/ Allison CD850 trans

They told us that at the time 3-4 of those warheads would level NYC. was that right? I was a tank mechanic. Hope you are doing as well with the aging process as I am.SID KELLY:
You guys had gotten my curiousity aroused about the ‘atom cannon’–never heard of it but entered it on search–came back as ‘atomic cannon’-damn!! Even a blurb where Johnny Cash sings while the video was playing–check it out!! And then I remembered, when I was a kid (1957 or ’58) I had a toy with the cannon in the middle and the detachable tractor and ‘tag along’–My time (1968-1970) we had the M551 Sheridan that could fire a conventional round or tactical nuclear warhead- I was just a mechanic so I don’t know if we even had the tactical round but??

Hey Tim J, What Troop were you in? Any chance you remember an incident in February 1968 when a GI saved the life of a German baby with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation? I got an email a year ago from the “baby”–not a 42-year-old woman–and she’s trying to find out who saved her. I was in B Troop from Sep. ’66 to Jan. ’68. Is it true that COL Beckwith fell off his horse during the change-in-command ceremony in Sep. ’68?Fred Berry Nelson:

from 1960 to 1962 spent 3/4 of the time in Graf & on the Czech border

to check that you DID NOT lossen your tie
or take off your suit/sport coat.

I was with D Btry, 4th Missile and in the same building with you guys. 1961-64.

I think it was 1962 when we had -15 degree winter and USAEUR had all engines cranked every hour — everything that had an engine.

I recall bundling up (post commander required ear cover before leaving post), heading downtown Schwabach to drink COLD beer!

Wednesday, 21. January 2009 20:55 Host: unassigned-115.175.NetSurf.Net  Going thru the list of those signed up, I don’t see any that I can recall. I was in B Battery 2/59 AD during the years 1970-1972. I was a driver on a Vulcan named The Beast (B33). I use to have dreams about my time there, but over the years the dreams have stopped. I often think about making a trip to visit O’brian Barracks, but as the years pass, it looks as though this will only be a thought. I left many good frinds behind when my time was up. Some of us got together in 1973 and that was the last time I saw anybody who was there at O’brian Barracks. Funny how that time in my life I hated being in the Army and being there at O’brian Barracks, but now I reflect on how it was an interseting experience that I’m glad it took place.
Anybody out there who remembers B Battery 2/59 AD during 1970-1972? Kenneth J. Jaeger:
I was in A Battery during the same time as you were there. You were on the 3rd floor and I was on the 2nd floor of the same building. I also was on a Vulcan.

I was in maintenance section of A troop. I knew old Gene James pretty well. After we were out I visited him once in Michigan. I think the town was Adrian. That was back in the 60’s and lost track of him after that. Do you remember Jerry Hensley from B troop? A crazy nut from Odessa, TX. Thanks again for contributing.
