Schwäbisch Gmünd

From 1963 to November 1968, the United States Army’s 56th Field Artillery Group, equipped with Pershing missiles, was headquartered at the Hardt Kaserne along with A and D batteries of the 4th Battalion, 41st Artillery. Headquarters & Headquarters Battery then moved down the hill to the Bismarck Kaserne in November 1968. Family housing and the commissary were across the street from the Hardt Kaserne and overlooked a hill above Bismarck Kaserne.

Schwäbisch Gmünd

Schwäbisch Gmünd is situated within the northern foothills of the Swabian Jura Mountains on the Rems river, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of the state capital Stuttgart. It marks the place where the Josefsbach (Waldstetter-bach) meets the River Rems. The municipal area comprises the localities (Ortschaften) of Bargau, Bettringen, Degenfeld, Großdeinbach, Herlikofen, Hussenhofen, Lindach, Rechberg, Rehnenhof-Wetzgau, Straßdorf, and Weiler.

  1. I Was stationed at Bismarck Kaserne from 87-89 HHB 56 FA Cmd

    I worked in G-3 Training / operations

    I eventually became the Driver For Col Wilbert and Sgt Major Lemoine

    I miss all my Pershing brothers and sisters and would love to hear from anybody in HHB esp G-3 .
    I often think about meeting my old buddies for a beer at “ Uncle Helmuts “

    I spent 18 Months at the BISMARCK KASERNE in Schwäbisch Gmünd from June of 1967 through Nov of 1968 in A Battery ad a Microwave Radio Operator, made Soldier of the Month twice toward the end of my tour and attended the 7th Army NCO academy in Bad Tulz, was up for Buck Sargent after that, but messed up while celebrating and blew that opportunity and came home.

  4. Assigned to the airfield during 1973 in aircraft maintenance. Then special assignment with the AYA (DYA) for a year. Last year with military police as OJT. Vietnam vet. Too many of us without career jobs. Next PCS at Ft Sill. Left Army in 1976.

  5. Hi Shawn when we left Kaserne in 63 we went to Zirndork I still drove for the officer they need someone to be a guard in a bunker where honest john war head was keep I did that with one other guy for one day two hour shift Have a good day Harold

    1. Sorry to be so long responding to your email. Hope things are going well for you. It is hot in Dallas. It would be nice to be back at Bismarck for the summer.
      I have been trying to see if I could locate Lt Bernardi, but no luck so far. Do you know where he is.
      I would like to see if we could meet sometime and replay old times too.

      1. Ray great to hear from you I have no idea where LT Bernardi would be. I would like to see you also. I have only been to Dallas one time busy place. Seneca Ks is small to Dallas. pick A place and we will try to work something out. The only guy I ever seen was jim Mc Collum we called him Mac .He came through here one time the last time I seen Mac. Most of our kids and grandkids live around here, Topeka or Kansas City. We usually go to Branson Mo twice a year and have been to Colorado about ever year but they all left. We don’t mind traveling, going someplace else. We’re fine, hope you are the same. I didn’t know you were ever named Woodie. Harold

When I drove for Lt Bernardi he told me his age he was about four years older than I was I am 82 so he would around 86. I dont know if you are still looking for him or not.       1. Hi Shaun the bunker I was in was at Pinder Barracks on a hill they call it bunker hill just two small rooms one you could sleep the other room once you went in you had to lock an sign paper every 15 min that no one entered. Outside was two tall fences. Any way have a good day Harold.

  6. Yes I remember the Volksfest also Ray Woods they was May 17-19 1963 I got two beer mugs an took them home with me. I still have them. One mug of beer was only 2.5 cents that was good times an had a lot of fun take care Ray

    1. Harold: It was really glad to hear from you. I think about the Volksfest at Bismarke often. Hope everything is well with you. I saw an article about a reunion that took place at Ft. Sill and saw a picture of Lt. Bernardi. Looked like made colonel. Take care of yourself and I will be in touch later.

      1. Hi Ray good to hear from you . Lt Bernardi told me that he was going to stay in for maybe 25 years he wanted me stay in also I told him I plan to go home when my time was up . I drove for two other officer before I dove for him .The first was there for two months then he left the next one was two weeks he wrote a bad check an then he was gone .Then Lt Bernardi came an he was the of the best of the best .He was great glad he made colonel.   7. I was stationed there from February of 1972 thru September of 1973 with the Signal Support Unit Stuttgart USASTRATCOM-EUR. Assigned to the 56th Field Artillery Command (Pershing missiles and launchers in courtyard) in their communications center. Lived off post for a year. Great times there!

    1. I was the Chaplain Assistant during 1973 1974. I was assigned and lived in the 56th Field Artillery Headquarters in the Bismarck Kasern. Great time and experience. At that time I was 18.

  8. I was station at Bismarck from October, 1962 until February, 1965. On arrival in 1962 it was a 155SP and 8 inch SP unit with the 56th FA Battlion, at that time they were the old open top 155 (A,B,C batteries) and M88 enclosed 8 inch (D battery)

    In early 1963, the unit received the M109 and M110. At the same time it was redesignated as the 1st Battlion 94th Field Artillary. I was in D Battery, SW Section for most of my tour.

    The Pershings were at Hardt Kaserne until at least 1966 or later.

    1. My ex-husband, Hector Silva, was stationed there in 1974-76. I was fortunate to be with him for one year, and I worked at a server at the officer’s club. We lived on the economy (off post) near the Catholic cathedral in Schwabish Gmund. What an experience!
