Holy crap! CP duty. I had totaly forgotton about that. As soon as I read that I got a flashback to Zep’s bar. We(CP patrol) got called to Zep’s to help out MP’s. Two friggin’ hero MP’s tried to bust a GI for hash in the bar, the place is packed. Fight starts. We arrive just as another MP jeep shows up. Riot starts in street. Both MP jeeps take heavy fire from Tucher bottles. Then the mob see us. I’m the ‘cruit PFC observer in the back of jeep and I’m scared. I can’t remember the driver, only my platoon Sgt. Tom Branard. Branard tells the driver to get the hell out of there ASAP before the mob gets to us. Mob gets to us befor we can turn the jeep around. I grab the fire extinguisher. Some one open the door on Branard and grabs him. I come around and smash the guy in the face with the extinguisher, pulled the pin and openend up on people’s faces with the dry chemical. Made Sp4 shortly afterwards.

yep. I remember Nestor and of course Tanker evans. (Vietnam Vet) Do you remember when someone dropped the mess hall tray and tanker hit the ground prone. Poor guy. No one laughed and everything went silent. Turcek helped him up. Wonderful story about how he got the bronze star. He was walking point in Vietnam, tripped and set off his M-60 by accident. The Vietcong (setting an ambush for them) thought he had spotted them and opened up. He saved the whole squad unintentionally. Was then transferred to Germany where we all found him. Ah Lifers and heads. What a strange time. Thanks guys for writing. I speak to and write Dozier every once in a while. Also tons of pics from 71 – 73 before I was transferred. Steve W. really nice to hear from you. Tell me how life turned out please. Steve H. yep that’s Hinton. Wore a hat and white tennis shoes. Big swimmer, life guard at pool for a few summers. Wrestler.
Charlie P. I was transferred around 73 1/2 for Erlangen. Orderely room clerk for a spell under 1st sgt “smiley” and then back to tracks and mess truck driver etc etc. …not important. Its possible we did not meet.Steve Harper:
Tanker Evans and Walt Starr picked my ‘cruit ass up from the ‘cruit bus in Jan of 73. They took me to Starr’s room.
Remember the center of the staircase and how you could see from the 4th floor to the basement? Some one dropped a firecracker down the stairwell. BOOM!! In the blink of an eye Tanker jumped up gathered me and Starr up and threw us to the floor with tanker laying over top of both of us. I was 18. Tanker was only a few years older than me. I saw this look on his face and in his eyes. He got up apologizing over and over and dusting us off. After he left Starr told me Tankers story.
I hope Tanker a millionaire, and living the dream.

Wasn’t sure when I looked at your photos. Did you know Ludwig? I think he is in photo. I will check back every few months to see who writes in.
Thanks for taking the time. P.S. When I wrote Col. Dozier a few years back he said we did so much field duty (8 months out of 12, I checked in, in 71 while they were in field) because we were pre special forces expansion. Thats why so much MISPIC, Whohenfels, Wallbach, Grag, Reforger, Tenneloe, etc etc. I still enjoy a shower today. When I have time I will write a story on Evans that Hinton was involved in. G.Greer:

I have a 21 year old son that is going to college in Germany for a year. He visit Schwabach, O’Brain Berracks on Sunday 12-21-2008. He e-mailed and this is what he said.
“On Sunday I went to Schwabach and found your old base. I think you would be surprised at how it has change. Most of the buildings are abandoned and there have been some new homes and business complexes build on the grounds. Sad to say, but the place looked like the apocalypse had swept though. It’s amazing how a mere 13 years can ruin a place. I found what I think, from your description, is your barrack. It’s abandoned, and in pretty bad shape. I doudt many of the buildings will be left standing there for more then a couple of decades. There is a museum for the city of Schwabach in one of the berracks that I went to see. It had some interesting photos about the history of the city and the base. The city is very pretty. When I was there on Sunday everything was close except for a few pubs. I took many pictures of the city and the base.”When my son sends me the photos, I will share them.

I recall him receiving some physological help and I remember talking to him numerous times in the barracks since they had all of the squadron maint. troops at the same end of the barracks.Oaks really took it very hard as we all could expect In addition, I belive they did give him a court martial and he wound spending 30 days in the stockade. When he did return to Schwabach he was a changed man deeply remorseful for the tragic incedent. I was in A-Btry stinger plt., 1986-1989. Daddy “V” was the pltsgt and then we got psg Laufer. We never did get along.I busted butt for that guy & the plt. Eveytime we came back from the field with the whole battery I always was chosen for infamous cq. I pulled that crap everytime a drunk could or would not pull his share of CQ, the Sgt would have the CQ runner come & get me everytime. I remember a Sgt Briddle,he is a little short guy that came from 82abn.GOD BLESS HIM and HIS FAMILY. There are so many good times though. I would always be in the german-american week runs and the germans would kick our butts when it came to running. I was the #1 american runner in the bn and stinger team chiefraff, todendorf, and crete. Anybody who was there while I was there e-mail me. I HATED IRON TIME TRAINING!!!Evin Moore:
I remember you Kelso. I was in Cahp Plt with SSG Spears and a few others. I was good friends with SGT. Baker, SGT Wilson, SGT. Briddell, SGT. Frame, SGT. Boyd, Sommerville, Rush,Glenn, SGT. Mitchell, SGT. Applin etc. In fact, Baker, Rush, Sommerville, and myself were in a bad car accident in JUL 89 taking Rush to Frankfurt but luckily we weren’t hurt. I was in the best chap squad in crete 87 and 88. I’ll email you.

|Friday, 28. November 2008 11:48 IP: 18.104.22.168 I don’t know why I’m recalling an event 41 years ago, but I am.It was Thanksgiving 1967. One of my buddies organized a Thanksgiving dinner for several of us, replete with a huge turkey prepared American style. The dinner was at a small Gasthaus in the village of Penzendorf, Bavaria, which was is four kilometers from Schwabach. The proprietor seemed delighted to be serving us. (It was a little town that rarely saw GIs, so there seemed to be no concerns that soldiers might be a bunch of drunken brawlers whom one wouldn’t want to see in the local Gasthaus, and there may even have been some recognition that our mission was to prevent an invasion by the Warsaw Pact countries. We sometimes visited the Gasthaus in Penzendorf in our fatigues, at a time when we were supposed to be in either civies or dress uniforms when we were off post.)Anyway, Thankgsiving dinner in Penzendorf was a warm and wonderful experience. I’m thinking of the German word, Gemütlichkeit.Sid Kelly:|
I, also, had a Gasthaus that I frequented. It was in Reichelsdorf? (between Schwabach and Nurnberg)-It was ‘off limits’ to GI’s but Jim Corbett was ‘in’ and took me there. When Jim rotated, I kept going. It was illegal to sell cigarettes to Germans, but as I smoked a pipe, I would buy American cigarettes and ‘give’ them to the Gasthaus owner—in return, I’d drink/eat free. Good people there!New Years Eve 1968—there was a big party there and I took two of my friends there.(They had just got to Germany and weren’t supposed to leave Post yet). The party was in the ‘Disco’ side of the Gauthaus. I would go into the Gasthaus side, get ‘wine shales’—(along with a complimentary shot of congnac?? And bring the ‘wine shale’ back to the ‘Disco’ side—where I promptly added several ounces of ‘Old Crow’—now, that made a very potent drink!!!—
When the clock struck MIDNIGHT, I was outside puking my brains out, and the ‘cruits had to drive us back to the Barracks!!
(Also, mid 1968, Larry Stinson re-enlisted and went Stateside on leave. Came back with Bobby Goldsboros new song ‘Honey’ andI LOVED that song!! The Gausthaus owner put it in the juke box for me and played it everytime I came in.)
The ONLY problem I ever had at the Gasthaus was a WWll Nazi soldier that didn’t like Americans—he and I tangled-I won and that’s the end of that story!!Fred Barry Nelson:
Hey, Sid, You’re a great story-teller and you have an amazing memory of small details. Interesting about the old Nazi. I never encountered any Germans who revealed any Nazi sympathies. Indeed, the only German I ever met who admitted fighting Americans was the bergermeister of Schwabach in 1967 who said he had learned his fluent American English in a POW camp in Virginia. He rented out an attic apartment in his house to married GIs.Sid Kelly:
Fred-some things are very ‘hazy’ but I did have my share of ‘fun’–Really wish I could get in touch with Roger Segars, Larry Stinson, Steve Soto and a few others I hung out with–In alot of ways, those were the best times of my life!!(and I know that you and I must’ve met during that time period–I was there from 6 Jan 1968-May ’70)Fred Barry Nelson:
Sid, I missed you by ONE DAY! I left O’Brien Barracks on Friday 5Jan68. I was due to be out processed at Ft Dix on 11Jan, but I tweaked my orders (I was B Troop clerk) and left Schwabach early. I spent the weekend plus a couple of days goofing off at Rhein/Main Air Base. Sorry I missed you! I have many good memories.

Hi Mark, I was in B trp 1/1 cav 2nd platoon Jan 73-July 75. I don’t think we knew each other, but I do remember going on a ski trip for a week- I think March ’73/4. I think they considered it TDY (temporary duty)because I know they didn’t dock our vacation. I remember so many of us in B troop wanted to go that they had to spread us out over 2 separate weeks back-to-back. I can still here that Austrian ski instructor saying “Don’t forgot (forget) the poles.”

Thanks for checking in. (and quite fibbing about all the time you spent in the field and on border duty… you were a Tamms clerk and didn’t have to do field duty very often. In fact we were all jealous.) I think you left before me. Around ’73 or ’74 early. I still remember having to dig up all those Pivot Steering bars for the M-114 that were being turned in. I requirement by the Tamms Clerk! The more I think about it, you didn’t hardly work at all, stuffed in that narrow (HEATED) motor pool office going over paper work orders for parts. Dating the local girls, partying all night, wondering into work around 9am while the rest of us were out in the cold and colder field. You see I have a good memory.
The Lifers/Heads. Constantly battling the brass for rights.
Dozier and I crossed paths a few years ago and we still argued. I got a first had story about his kidnapping by red brigade in Italy…whew.
GREAT to hear from you Steve! Leave a note about how life turned out. Married? Kids? Work? (or in your case, not)LOL Turcek and I and the rest of the guys want to hear from you.Steve Welch:
I remember Tanker Evans, Turcek,
Hinton and many others.
field duty (8 months out of 12, in 71&72 (because we were pre special forces expansion???). Thats why so much MISPIC, Henfels, South Schwabach, Graf, , Tenneloe, etc. With the 3rd plt Scouts.
I have to admit “Tamms” in HQ plt was “over/easy” duty.
I don’t remember the pivot steer rods. When I was a driver
on the M-114’s we didn’t have pivot steer. I get blamed for everything but I’m used to it
being a married man.
I”ll give you a call or E-mail
and get Greer’s info.Rick Slimp – Napa CA:
Still got your Grand Funk album “On Time” want it back?Steve Welch:
Trying to remember did we

I sold my stereo and all my albums just before I ets’d.
To you maybe? Keep the GFR album and God Bless.

I left there halfway through 1971.Right before I left, they took the 50’s off the Sheridans and installed 20 MM’s I was in A troop, don’t remember what Platoon. I don’t remember the swimming pool at O’brien either. Anyway I LOVE THE WEBSITE. It brings back a lot of memories. Didn’t see any names out of the 300 something that I recognized. If you recognized me, e-mail me. Don’t remember many names either, SSGT Meza, Massengil, A little skinny black guy named Jackson from Detroit I think, Mercer from New Jersey.|

I too was in A Troop 2/4 Cav. from March 71 to April 72. I was a cook there trained at Fort Polk,LA.
I have a 21 year old son that is going to college in Germany
for a year. He visit Schwabach,
O’Brain Berracks on Sunday 12-21
-2008. He e-mailed and this is
what he said.
“On Sunday I went to Schwabach and found your old base. I think you would be surprised at
how it has change. Most of the
buildings are abandoned and there have been some new homes
and business complexes build on
the grounds. Sad to say, but the place looked like the
apocalypse had swept through.
It’s amazing how a mere 13 years
can ruin a place. I found what
I think, from your description,
is your barrack. It’s abandoned
and in pretty bad shape. I doudt many of the buildings will
be left standing there for more than a couple of decades. There was a museum for the City of Schwabach in one of the barracks
that I went to see. It had some interesting photos about the history of the city and the base. The town itself is very pretty. When I was there on Sunday everything was closed except for a few pubs. I took many pictures of the city, and the base.”
When my son sends me the photos, I will share them.

Hood in 2nd AD then came to Schwaback in 4th AD. When I was there we had troops A thru D plus HQ of the 15th cav which was a recon squadron within the 4th AD. Also there was one battery of the 80th (I think) artillery. They were not in 4th AD. Maybe under 7th Army. They were equipped with one or two 280 mm. atomic cannons. These things fired an atomic warhead that had unbelievable capabilities. It seems like they told us 4 of them would level NYC back then. I left there in 1960 and went back t Ft. I remember Mels last trip to Graf–We had permision to fly the Georgia Flag ofrom the radio antenna on our M578–Mel was ‘pissed’ about going to ‘Nam and was ‘goosing’ the engine and ‘smoked’ some B Troopers–A mexican and Black took offense at the Ga Flag and smoke-jumper up on the track and were pulling Mel out of the driver hatch–I came down the boom from the TC hatch swinging a 24″ crescent wrench and the fight was on!!!! Really strained and tense on the train ride to Graf, but that’s life in the fast lane!!

I served in the 2/59th ADA in the S-3 section of Headquarters Battery. Like many there at the time I was among the last of the draftees. For the last six to nine months I was in S-3 I was the Senior Radio Operator and drove and maintained the section’s deuce and a half radio and operations van (H-16). While not in the field I acted as a day driver for HHB officers. My Section Officer was Major Rudy and my Section Chief was Sgt. Maple.I now look back on those days as some of the best in my life. But at the time, like all of us there, I just wanted to get back to the States.I welcome any emails from guys who served at O’Brien during this time.Charlie Page ,Buffalo NY:|
Hey I was one of those last of the draftees .B Troop 1/1 Cav mechanic 73 Jul- 74 Sep . We all could not wait to go back to the world (USA) and get out of the Army . From reading this site , I think we all would like to go back in time, Drink beer raise hell and be young again .SP/5 Fred Barry Nelson:
We always remember the good times, don’t we? I was NOT a happy soldier, but I sure do have happy memories. I was an RA…a “Royal Axxhole.” But only because the draft was on my back…making me what my father (a two-tour Navy man, who survived Iwo) called “a handcuffed volunteer.” (I was in B Troop, ’66-’68.)Charlie:
Hey Fred ,I never really like be drafted, but I went into the Army Reserves in 1977 and still in now any I would not change anything .

Bridgewater (and later Capt. Snoddy) in the Airspace Coordination Element (ACE)as a Radio Operator. Also Sgts Miller and Villegos. Capt Rivard was the Battery commander and 1st Sgt Smith was the Top Sgt in the early days.I was sent to Hepburg (PSP 35) (near Ingolstadt) from about Feb to July 1973 during the barracks renovation and then back to O’Brien. I think some of the line batteries may have spent time guarding the ammo dump at PSP 35. Those that were there will probably have no trouble remembering that Quonset hut hell-hole. Especially if you were there during the winter.I look back on those days as really care-free times (although I am not sure I knew that then).I visited Schwabach during the summer of 2007 and had my picture taken in front of the old HHB barracks 35 years almost to the day after I originally arrived there in July of 1972. That was a real trip.I found Mom’s although it is no longer in business. I remember a pizza place right outside the front gate but could not find it. I had dinner at the Weller Brau. It was like every other gasthaus I remember from back in that day.It was not really one of my hangouts but a buddy we were traveling with used to eat there in 1973. He said it was still the same.I would love to hear from others stationed in Schwabach during the early 70’s.Bob Lembke:|

Sid, Every VA hospital has a VFW and or an American Legion benefit rep on site. You don’t have to be a member to talk to one. Take your 214 and any other documents relating to your injury and they might be able to help you. I did with a 20 year old injury I got in Wildflecken and they got me 10%. Not much, but it was something. Good Lock>Sid Kelly:
Stew-thanks for the reply–I belong to the DAV and The American Legion–even going to the next CSO Class for the DAV–(to learn to help out some of the younger troops)–but have hit a ‘brick wall’ on these records–It was only during an appeals hearing that the VA rep produced some documents that helped me get some of my SC ratings-but the records for my injury were lost–I’m going to copy and forward to some of the guys here my ‘Separation Physical’ where it lists ‘worn neck/ back brace’ and ‘neck/ back strain’ just to see if I can get documentation that the records are legit–after all, they were produced by the VA at the hearing??

In 1971, I was standing in line for family quarters assingment at Ft Meade, Md. and this guy taped my on the shoulder. It was SFC Garry Boggs and our families were again united. We were reassigned to Katterbach. I was there when the roads along the rear most set of buildings was dirt – actually mud! After the new motor pool was complete, they moved us and once again had crappy conditions! I stayed in Germany through my Army career (4 years). Also, I married a local girl (Schwabach) in 1988 – her Parents & Brother still in Schwabach and we visit every 2 years or so…|
I love that town, although the base was too small. Lastly, if some of you haven’t seen the place in the last several years, it is now a transient area with apartments and shops – AND – Mike’s Pizza (all 3) are still there!!!
Have a good one! DECK

|Sunday, 12. August 2007 10:35 IP: 68-119-203-193.dhcp.spbg.sc.charter.com I was in C-Troop 1/1 Cav from Nov. 79 thru Oct. 81. I remember those times more than any other in my life… Graf, Border Patrol, Reforger, Downtown… buying stereo equipment at the PX in Neurmburg… the train rides, the cabs… the pizza… pom-frits… and most of all Lt. Col. Copes. Why… he was my Gunner at Graf one year… the stereo wars were great… how about those red tile floors we had to wax. Got there right when we got the new M60A1s and they just got rid of the 551s. I plan to go back over to visit… i know it’s going to be bittersweet…|
