195) John Logan BigJ8024@aol.camLocation: Gardena, CA | Saturday, 1. December 2007 15:49 Host: cache-ntc-ad05.proxy.aol.com My name is John Logan, and was a PFC. assigned the 53 Ordnance Co. which was a direct support company to the 2nd ACR. I was stationed at Merrell Barracks from 1960 to 1963. Anybody that was stationed there, certainly came away with the feeling that they were living in a place of profound historical value — a never ending curiosity that lives with me to this day. We were right there to witness some of Hitler’s failed mole like military tactics, which was more than prevalent at Merrell. Using two 5 ton wreckers, we uncapped two extremely large heavy metal plates in the motor pool area . We were amazed to find an underground motor pool, complete with various types of WW 2 tactical vehicles, to include motorcycles, Lt. pc’s and a halftrack left undisturbed since the end of the war. There were bricked up passage ways leading from the motor pool in more that one direction that was rumored to have gone as far as Soldiers Field — a fairly elaborate escape plan for the time! From there, our find led to the discovery of several underground passage ways, and even an underground shooting range. Around the time we were devising plans to further our search, our discoveries were getting the attention of the higher command — and that any further attempts to continue would be met with severe disciplinary action. Well, that was the end of that. This is one story out of many reasons that Merrell Barracks had to be one of the most interesting places on earth to be stationed.Jerry Page: I am Jerry Page I was a welder in the service section of the 53rd from July 62 to oct 64 Sargent Jones an ex marine was are section leader and I remember something about those tunnels. We used to dump our unauthorized tools in them before a GI inspection. Were you a wrecker driver? |

I was stationed there with the 502M MI Co, 2nd ACR from Dec. 87 until we returned from DESERT STORM and PCS’d to VHFS, Va in Aug. 91. From our rotations to Graf, to the border camps and Mt Schneeberg, and recovery at the Irish Pub, The Green Goose, and the Nashville club across town I’d have to say it was great holding down the fort there for four years!Spc. Loved going in to ‘burg on the weekends…Green Goose, The Rock House..etc. How many of you out there rode the UBAHN without paying…I still have outstanding tickets I think..lol.I remember going to Graf in ’85 and in less than a week our unit managed to destroy the “safe training” record…with the vehicle battery exploding in a mechanics face, a civilian tech-rep walking into the tail-rotor of a cobra and an OH-58 catching fire while in flight..and who could ever forget CSM Carmichael and 1SG Ray…those guys cracked me up. I snuck back into the Kaserne in 1996 on a detour from a business trip to Egypt and even visited my old office next to the 2nd ACR conference room and museum. What a great assignment it was! We even had a radio show on AFN Nurnberg called “Hit the Leather and Ride!” started by my old friend Doc Buhner. It looks to me like the Germans are getting ready to tear down the Kaserne, if they already haven’t done it. Too bad, as it was a monument to history–both World War II and the Cold War. My late father in law was in one of the units that took Nurnberg in WWII, so it may have been some of his men who machine gunned the entrance! Small world. 162) Dwayne T. Moore dtmoore@theciti.netLocation: Alpharetta, GA | Monday, 25. June 2007 00:09 IP: 170.35.208.22 Gangster Hotel was my first tour of duty after AIT. I arrived in Jan 1985. Assigned to the 614th maint co motor pool as a generator mechanic. SGT Gates, SGT Lumpkin, SPC Green, SGT Kelly, Crazy Jeff form NC, SPC Lindsey, my room mate SPC Tavares and SPC Vicent Jennings are a few names I remember. I bought pizza almost every night directly accross the street for the main gate and listened to Sade’s Smooth Operator. I remember the mark rate go to 3 marks to the dollar. The Dusendikes, the Green Goose, the Wall, gusthouse’s, and the NCO club bring back awesome memories. Remember Fasha season right before October fest? I had lots of friends from 507th, 182nd (SGT Carrol), HQ, and other Kaserne’s. Paid lots of fines on the u-bon subway, and came in 2nd place at the USAREUR star search talen contest. Remember Reforger? I went to the Amberg detachment (Pond Barracks)near Graf in Nov of 85 until Dec of 86. Those were some of the best times of my life. Comrades, drop me a line, auf Wiedersehen.Darrell Lawrence: Actually, I think you were next door to the Motor Pool, which is where I was at that time. You had a Warrant Officer as your boss, right? You guys did machine work?
On the other side of us was the Generator shops. |

June 2007 13:23 IP: 38.114.152.252 My first duty station after AIT, I was with Headquarters & Headquareters Troop, 2nd Armored Cav. I was the assistant troop clerk from July 196 – August 1969, at which time I was reassigned to Vietnam. Colonels Baldwin and Allen were the regimental commanders. Joe Foglio was the regimental Sergeant Major. Troop commenders during my tour were CPT Willard Hatch, CPT Myron O. Artist, CPT Larry Taylor. William T. Story was the troop first shirt for most of my year. Pat Picciano was the troop clerk when I arrived. Frank Zack had the job when I left. Been back to Nurnberg several times since 2000. Still a great city and the beer tent at the Volksfest is still a good place to go for a fun time, even for old dudes. Merrell Barracks has changed considerably. Besides the remodel to the main structure the consolidated mess building is gone (as is the motor pool and other buildings) and in 2005 it appeared they were letting regimental headquarters and adjacent structures pretty much go down the tubes.R Smith: I was there with you, SP4 Smith, regimental photog, assigned to S-1. Don Holder was the S-1 adjutant for part of my tour. Still friends and in touch with SP4 Walsh and Shrock. All the best to you. |

We always seemed to end up at the castle and the bahnhof whenever we went downtown. Barracks life in Merrell in 1969/1970 was many times “like, far out, man!” Like living in a commune with a military theme. I didn’t realize then that they were really good times.gbttown1: Great comment Bill. Like a “commune with a military theme”. Needless to say they didn’t like us much during ’70-’72 for treating their Army in such a fashion. Peace Bro’Mike Troup—Phoenix: I got there 12/71. Talk about dope use (hashish). I worked with great officers like Jim Kinzer, Roy Mault, Hans Reich, Rick Jones, Bob Loy, Randy Golonka, and Dave Tosch. It certainly didn’t look the same upon my return visit in 95. Battery 3Bn. 17th FA from June 1980 until early 1982 when I was assigned to HHB as Motor Sergeant after an IG inspection. The inspection team deadlined nearly all of the vehicles in HHB motor pool. We were to go to Graff within a week. The mechanics and I worked until 10:00 PM every night until we left for Graff. We were able to repair every thing but one vehicle. While in C. Batt. the Bn.Commander wanted to road march the track vehiclec to Graff. We had guns and M548’s scattered from Merrell Bks to Graff. It took me and my mechanics at least a week to get every thing to Graff. What was worse was that once we arrived at Graff, we were to go into an ARTEP. It was not goog to have only one of six guns able to fire.Delia: Hi Gene, do you remember a Trent, Dock? He was in the motor pool too about that time?Bearl Bruffett: I remember looking at that name tag many times Sarge. You probobly won’t remember me but I was transfered to the motor pool sometime in 1980 intil 81. Ratt Rigg driver operator, tore up a couple of those. Remember “Q-Ball” Actually only having one out of six guns fire wasn’t that bad. What would continiously break down my Gamma goat equipment was the “Battery fire” all six guns fireing at the same time…ya, you remember that. Then if the sheel would fire before leaving the tube….look out. |
