200) John J Burfete Jr johnnypros@comcast.netLocalización: – | Lunes, 4. Febrero 2008 18:34 I was drafted in September 1966 and went to the ASA. After 98J20 training at Ft. Devens, I arrived at Herzo Base on June 6, 1967 just as the Arab-Israeli war broke out. Company C, 318th Bn was my first assignment and we were gearing up to head to Israel in support of the 24th Inf. Division just as I arrived. Fortunately we didn’t go. Not knowing what to do with a 98J, I worked in the supply office. It was really great duty and I obtained a second MOS as a supply specialist. Company C rotated to Ft. Riley, KS in the spring of 1968 so I was able to transfer to Company A, 318th BN. Who wanted to spend 3 years in Ft. Riley, KS? Not me. Although my MOS was 98J20, I spent most of my time as the company supply sergeant. We went to “the field” about once a year to test our mobile, i.e. truck mounted equipment and bone up on our primary MOS skills. The field was usually a site overlooking the Czech border. I was also TDY a few times to Rimbach/Mt.Eckstein, Mt. Schneeberg, and Wobeck. That $18 per diem came in handy. My wife, baby daughter, and I lived off base in the new high rise apartment building on Bunzlauer Str near the Herzogenaurach airport. ETS from Herzo Base and Co. A in mid-August 1970. That’s an amazing 37 + years ago. |

198) Anni Localización: – | Lunes, 28. Enero 2008 08:05 Hey, I just stumbled across this site. I’m from Herzogenaurach and I went to Montessori Elementary School at Herzo Base from 1993 to 1997.This is an interesting site and I would like to make a post, too. Sorry if I make mistakes, English isn’t my first language. I could post some pictures of Herzo Base if somebody is interested.OMG, the Herzo Base…There was so much wild life and so much space to play.We kids loved to build houses out of sticks. I remember some friends and I went off one day at a school party and explored the old barracks. Looking back it might have been dangerous, because some of them were a bit torn down already, but back than it was just a huge adventure for us. It was so dark and dusty in there, windows and doors were broken and all kinds of animals were making strange noises. We went into one building that seemed to have been a medical centre. The boys wanted to scare me since I was the only girl and told me that the soldiers might have forgotten someone and we might find a skeleton on a dentist chair or something like that. I was frightened but of course we didn’t find a skeleton. Our old school building has been torn down as most of the old barracks. There is a living area at the Herzo Base and they are considering to build a huge shopping area there. And of course Adidas is at the Herzo Base since about 10 years I think. It’s their Corporal Headquarter. And MC Donalds is there, too.Greetings from Herzogenaurach, Anni |

Stationed 1967 to 1970. Attended Erlangen and Neuremburg schools. My parents are alive and well, and I would love to hear from anyone who may remember us. I was heavy into girl scouts (my much younger brother Steve was our mascot) I was also on the cheerleading squad for the men’s basket ball team. Also in the dancing class that performed on base at several recitals and for base outings. I hold very fond memories of Herzo, .25c movies on Saturday mornings, the club for the kids, and time spent at the EM Club. We lived off base, first in a private apartment in Herzogenaurach, and then to off base quarters outside the base. Good time, great place, loved the locals and the countryside. |

Noviembre 2007 21:16 I was stationed with 2/12 FA from 89 to 92, and was there for the first part of the drawdown of the base. The best part of the assignment was the 2 deployments to Crete for live fire of the Lance system. What a blast. Does anyone know what happened to the Herzo Golf course? Did it get destroyed like everything else? There was a lot of good drinking that went on there with Brother George. Those were good times for sure. |
181) James Localización: Iraq | Sábado, 17. Noviembre 2007 11:00 My name is James Cafferty, son of the late LTC James C Cafferty, who was the Base Commander during 1964-1966. I was born there in June of 1966, but returned to Washington DC soon after. My father passed away in 1990. I unfortunately did not return to Herzo until about two years ago and well…not much was left. Where a base was is no more and Adidas and new homes now stand. I was saddened greatly that I had waited to long to return. |

174) Viola (Gonzales) Michaelis Localización: Loveland, CO | Sábado, 29. Septiembre 2007 23:52 I’m an army brat who lived in the off base housing from 1972 to 1978. Went to Erlangen elementary, and Nurnberg Jr. High and High School. Still stay close to a number of NHS Eagles! My dad was assigned to the 210th FA Group – Sgt. J.R. Gonzales. He worked in the building immediately to the left of the base entrance and caught me sneaking onto base one or two times in “inappropriate clothing” – back then, it was hiphuggers and tiny little shirts tied up high. We roamed the base all the time – wandering from the AYA to the Gym to the movie theater. Spent many a day at the ball field to play softball or watch the boys play sports. Can’t even begin to think how many kilometers I logged riding/walking to the Freibad, duck pond and other places that got me far away from the view of the parents! Ever look at the base/housing on Google Earth! WOW! What changes have occurred. Looking for a good picture of the downtown area where one could walk under the archway adjacent to the tower? remember that? Email me if you have pictures! |
