I arrived at Ferris Barracks in April of 1982, and by the time I left Germany back stateside Bannisch was in charge, and I left in October of 1983.
Unfortunately, I arrived at Alpha Company 1/46 just in time to be a witness to the guys on the upper floor of the barracks toss out a wall locker with an officer in it!!! I was one of the Mortar Platoon guys in Alpha Company.

      1. I was told that before I arrived at 1-46 INF in January 1974, an 11B in A Co shot the brigade XO with his M-16 and some smuggled ammo from a second story barracks window as the LTC was walking across the parade field. According to the story, the round hit him in the stomach and lifted him off his feet, but he survived. I was never able to verify that, but those were wild and wooly days back then.

      1. Hi, Allan. Bill Eldard here. We served together in 1/46 1974-1976. I was in HHC (worked as OJT Bn Legal Clerk), then C Co. I think you had B Co. legal duties and that’s how we met. I seem to recall taking a tour of Dachau together; some Rec Ctr package deal. Hope the years since have served you well!

          1. Well, after my discharge, I went back to college, got married, and got a commission as an intel officer in the Navy. Made a 21 yr career out of it. Leslee and I retired for good when the pandemic started. We live in nothern VA. How about you?

            1. Hey, Bill!

Great to hear from you! After my discharge I studied Russian at the University of Texas, got married and worked for several years as a newspaper reporter and editor here in Austin. (I had hoped to work in Moscow, but the American news agencies had no interest in an American Russian speaker.) Eventually I went to law school in Boston. I spent 30 years practicing civil and government law in the private and public sectors until my retirement last year. My wife, also a lawyer, ran a program to help lawyers and judges suffering drug and alcohol addiction.

I met a lot of intel types when I was studying Russian, and some of them are still in the service. I considered it, but my wife wasn’t wild about living in Russia. So we are in Austin for the duration.

If you are ever in or near Austin, please let me know. I’d love to see you and to catch up. Until then, take good care of yourself.

              Allan

              1. Congratulations on your retirement, Allan. Sounds like you and your wife had great careers. Likewise, if you’re up DC way, let me know!

      2. Allen

I was in B Co, 1/46 from 74 to 76. Would you have any other contacts? Phil

        1. Hey, Phil! I remember you! Gordon Mercer was in college in Texas several years ago if I recall correctly. Otherwise I don’t recall being in touch with any of our old colleagues. It feels like another life.

Take good care of yourself, buddy.

          Allan

          1. Allen

After coming back home in 76 I worked here in Arkansas until 83 when we moved to Houston Texas and worked for 33 years. After retirement we moved back and live West side of Little Rock. Good to hear from you hope this finds you well!

            1. Thanks, Phil! I hope you and yours are doing well. If you’re ever in Austin, get in touch with me.

        2. I was specialist Trivette. I was in 3rd platoon from 1972-1975. Ted Syrick was the company clerk when I was there. Do you remember him?

          1. I remember you, Jack! We overlapped for about a year in 1975. I remember Ted, although he left pretty soon after I got to B 1/46. I took over as company clerk from him. I recall he was a pretty nice guy.
